Philip Ciolina

Year first exhibited:
2010

Philip Ciolina was born into an anglo swiss-italian family who founded the well known store Jelmoli in Zurich in 1833 and so his early years were spent moving between the two countries and travelling through France where his mother grew up. Later he studied painting at the Royal College of Art and the Cite International des Arts, Paris in 1972.

His pictures, intimate both in scale and subject matter, are mostly works on paper. They use a technique which he has developed over some years, layering handmade paper, using watercolour and incorporating drawing . A passion for classical music and poetry informs what he makes.

His work has been seen at the Hayward Gallery, Barbican, Mall Galleries and internationally in Italy, Spain, Germany and New York and is in numerous private collections.

In 2005, Philip was awarded a prize for work on paper by the NEAC, and in 2011 he won the Vintage Classic Random House prize in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition. The image chosen is to be used on a book of poetry by Robert Frost and comes from his most recent 'Rose Series' begun in late 2010 and relates to an intense period of reading and listening to 'Burnt Norton' from the Four Quartets by T S Eliot.

Currently, he works between England and SW France.
