The Land and The Sea
'I was lucky in that I was born into a landscape so beautiful I had no need to go elsewhere. There was never a question of what I should paint.'
Wales, in turn, is lucky that such a talented artist should have been so inspired by the landscape and seascape of his native country. Kyffin Williams was born in 1918 and, throughout a long and prolific career, he kept faithful to the subject around him: the rugged mountains and the shadowy valleys of Snowdonia; the stonebuilt cottages of Gwynedd and sunlight over the Menai Strait; the immutable land and the ever-changing sea.
Kyffin's work is well-known and greatly loved - he was a "people's" artist in many ways, not least for his painting of individuals in their own habit. His collection, 'Portraits', which was published in 1996, received great acclaim: '...the best, like emotive landscapes, are works of vigorous love. Kyffin's warmth of feeling radiates throughout' - Art review. There is no doubt that this book will provide comparable delight, revealing as it does Kyffin's obsession with the elements, his great affection for country life and his celebration of all that is beautiful and timeless in the natural world.
