Paintbrush Poet
William Selwyn was born in Caernarfon in 1933. In 1954, after completing two years in the National Service in the Royal Artillery, he studied at Bangor Normal College until 1956. He subsequently taught at Maesincla Junior School and at Sir Hugh Iwen School until his retirement in 1990. Selwyn's art is centered on the landscape of Gwynedd, its farm workers and fishermen. He is a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, a winner of the Singer and Friedlander/Sunday Times 11th Watercolour Competition in 1998.
This book is a celebration of William Selwyn. " The love of his own land of Gwynedd and its people has made him into one of the most sought after painters of today and one of the most brilliant watercolourists in Britain. There is also his technical mastery of his medium, and the poetry in his work, which have enabled him to interpret his landscape in a truly personal way. It is natural that someone who cares so much for the world around him should be a delightful and modest man, a family man and an unpretentious man, a man who loves great art but one who is too sincere to wear his passions on his sleeve in order to impress." (Extract from the Introduction by Sir Kyffin Williams)
