William Selwyn was born in Caernarfon in 1933, and continues to live there today. In 1954, after completing national service in the Royal Artillery, he studied at Bangor College, until 1956. He went into teaching, and held art positions at Syr Hugh Owen School and Maeincla Junior School until his retirement in 1990. Since then, Selwyn has devoted himself to painting full-time.

His paintings are centred on the Landscape of Gwynedd, its farm workers and fishermen. Snowdonia, on his doorstep, has been a constant inspiration with its dramatic mountain passes and ever changing light.

Selwyn has exhibited widely in England and Wales, and is an elected member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. In 1998 he won Singer & Friedlander / Sunday Times 11th Watercolour Competition and in 2001 ‘Welsh Artist of the Year’. His works are in the collections of Gwynedd Council, Anglesey County Council, the University of Bangor, the Arts Council of Wales, the National Library of Wales and in many private collections in Britain and abroad.

William Selwyn has been exhibiting with Thackeray Gallery since 2000.
