Willow Legge
Willow trained at Chelsea School of Art from 1951-1956 and has developed a career as an artist and sculptor ever since. Following her art school training, Willow began her career by creating drawings and sculptures of her friends and family which led to her acceptance by the Society of Portrait Sculptors. This in turn led to some eminent commissions.
From 1987-2000, Willow was also employed as a portrait sculptor at the Tussauds studio where she captured the likenesses of many leading celebrities of the day. The studio atmosphere was undoubtedly a creative and stimulating working environment for Willow and a huge change from the early days at Chelsea.
As well as working full time, Willow has quietly pursued her own personal vision and has continued to work on many sculptures which are all influenced and inspired by nature, natural forms and wild-life. Whilst her work at Tussauds was focused on outward appearance, Willow’s more personal pieces are concerned with the inner essence of a character. Willow is constantly challenged and attracted to the dilemma of how she sees the inner world of things versus their outer appearances. It is through this exploration, that Willow achieves such extra-ordinary works of art that are quiet, contemplative and touching.
Throughout her career, Willow has exhibited widely including, The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the National Portrait Gallery Touring Exhibition and the Society of Portraits Sculptors annual exhibitions. She currently lives and works in West Sussex.
